Expedition Packages

Rock Climbing

It can be hard to get started with rock climbing, and this trip is designed to help families learn the essentials before investing in expensive equipment. Families will be instructed by experienced Bighorn staff members while spending their time climbing along the US-Canada border in the Kootenai National Forest.

Once inside the Kootenai National Forest, the Stone Hill climbing area offers a good range of easy to moderate climbing routes, along with hiking trails and opportunities to paddle board or canoe on nearby Lake Koocanusa.

Itinerary

Arrive at Camp Bighorn between 2pm and 4pm on the Monday of your expedition. Families will sleep at Camp Bighorn Monday night, departing for the Stone Hill Climbing area Tuesday morning, camping in the Kootenai National Forest until the last day of your reservation.

Backpacking

Lace up your boots and get ready to hike, cook, and camp in the Montana backcountry! Families are encouraged to bring their own gear, but most equipment can be provided. The hiking difficulty will be adjusted to suit each family's experience level, so parents can rest assured that their family will be able to make the journey. Bighorn staff members will trek alongside you, sharing seasoned advice while leading the way to beautiful views and empowerment for future family backpacking plans.

Note: Some gear items are available, but supplies are limited. Items available include headlamps, mugs, plates, utensils, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, tenting, shell jacket, mid-weight base layers, and backpacks. These items will be included in the trip cost. Due to sizing; however, backpacks are only available for hikers ages 10+ (approximately). A detailed packing list will be provided after registration, but can be shared prior to registration by request. Please use the Contact page for requests and/or to reserve items for your expedition.
